Mudding is the practice of taking an ATV out on a very muddy trail. While mudding can provide a unique riding experience, a standard ATV is not usually equipped to handle the challenges that come with mudding. Luckily, this guide from Car Corral Polaris - Carmi can help you get your ATV ready for a fun mudding trip.

Prepare the Airbox

The airbox is an empty chamber located near your quad’s engine intakes where air is collected before it goes into the cylinders. One of the biggest dangers associated with mudding is mud somehow finding its way into your engine, so it’s important to make sure that your airbox is sealed watertight before you go mudding. Another danger is that mud or water will find its way into the inlet. That’s why most experts recommend installing a snorkel kit in your ATV if you plan to go mudding. Snorkel kits raise the inlet above the waterline to keep water out, much like snorkels do for swimmers. A standard snorkel kit will include extended CVT inlets, extended air intakes, and outlet exhausts.

Move the Radiator

Most ATV models place the radiator above the front rack. You may need to relocate your ATV’s radiator before you go mudding in order to keep it dry. You might also need to tape or otherwise modify the radiator to ensure that it doesn’t clog up.

Get a Winch

Nothing ruins a good mudding run like your ATV getting stuck in the mud. If this happens, getting your ATV out will be much easier if you have a winch installed. Inspect the winch before each ride by setting it to free spool. Once your inspection has been completed, respool the winch by applying pressure.

Grease Up Your ATV's Parts

Mud and water can damage your ATV’s internal circuitry. Marine grade dielectric grease will provide the circuitry with some protection. If you’re worried about your ATV’s throttle, hand grips, and brake levers getting coated by mud, spray them down before the trip with some WD-40.
