Tips for Preparing Your ATV for Storage
If you plan to not use your ATV for a few weeks or months, you’ll likely want to store it properly to keep its safety and functionality intact. Don’t worry if you’re unsure where to begin—we can help you get started!
Clean & Lubricate Parts
Before storing your ATV, you’ll want to clean it thoroughly using mild soap and water. Debris, dead bugs, dust, or mud can ruin the finish when left to sit for months.
Once you’ve cleaned the exterior and allowed it to dry, wax all the chrome and paint to add a protective layer. Finally, lubricate all the moving parts, such as cables, chains, sprockets, and lug nuts.
Change Oil & Top Off Fuel
Most gasoline varieties have ethanol to extend the supply and be more environmentally friendly. However, ethanol gas attracts water, which can induce corrosion in your tank if left to sit for a long time.
Whenever possible, use pure gasoline without ethanol, and if you must use an ethanol-based gas, ensure you fill the tank up to the brim and add a fuel stabilizer before you store your machine. Run the engine for a few minutes to distribute the stabilized gasoline through the engine to coat fuel-related components, then change the oil and oil filter while your machine is warm.
Store The Battery
Next, you’ll want to remove your ATV’s battery and store it on a trickle charger in a warm place during winter. A battery left inside the vehicle can discharge completely, meaning it may no longer hold a charge when spring comes. You’ll also be able to prevent corrosion by keeping the battery away from moisture and out of the cold.
Adjust Tires
Furthermore, adjust your tires by inflating your radial tires a little over standard riding pressure. If you have bias-ply tires, you’ll want to deflate them to remove moisture before re-inflating them to the correct level. These steps will prevent flat-spotting, which is wear that occurs when the same patch of rubber has pressure applied to it over time, as your ATV’s tires will when you store it.
